A court in Tunisia has jailed a couple for kissing in public after officials describe the action of the lovers as “public indecency”.

The Frenchman and a Tunisian woman were convicted on appeal in the country’s capital, Tunis after having an argument with police following their arrest for hugging in a car.

The couple have denied the charges claiming they did not kiss in the car as was said by the police when they were confronted.

The incident let to a huge public outrage on social media.

The man will now spend four months in prison for “public indecency” and “refusing to obey the police”. His partner the woman was handed a two month sentence on “public indecency”.

AFP quoted a spokesman for the country’s public prosecutor’s office, Sofiene Sliti as saying that the decision of the court was “an independent decision.”

“What has been reported nationally and internationally is wrong — they weren’t arrested for a kiss, the couple was naked,” he added.

According to proceedings in court, on Wednesday the woman burst into tears when the court president read out a police description which said a sexual act was in process when the couple were arrested on October 1.
