Gunmen on Tuesday attacked a convoy of University workers in Kenya killing two persons in what local media described as an ambush.
Those killed were staff of the Technical University of Mombasa (TUM) and were attacked together with other staff and students in south of Mombasa while traveling to their campus.
Police in the area have said that the gunmen who carried out the attack are still unknown and their intentions not clear.
A police spokesperson Joseph Chebusit told Reuters the “bus carrying students of TUM was ferrying them from their hostels to the campus in Ukunda for classes and was being escorted by a van that had some staff of the college and two escort police officers.”
“Armed men numbering about 10 emerged from the bushes and started firing at the van in front. As a result two ladies who are staff of TUM were killed in the van. The driver of the van and two police officers were injured,” he said.
The attackers are however suspected to be either robbers or militants.
Reuters reported that Somali Islamist militants al Shabaab often carry out attacks in the Kenyan coastal area with the killing of 148 students of Garissa town near the Kenya-Somali border in 2015.
