A new report by one of Ghana’s leading research institutes showed that many Ghanaians do not think about working conditions when accepting job offers.

The Institute of Statistical Social and Economic research (ISSER) in its report said workers are only interested in securing a job placement due to the high unemployment rates in the West African nation.

The report entailed in Ghana’s Social Development Outlook 2016 Report also said decent working conditions for workers in the formal sector especially has worsened over the past five years.

The Head of the Social Division at the Institute of Statistical, Social and Economic Research (ISSER), Dr. Nana Akua Anyidohu told local media that “even if people are finding jobs, the kind of jobs, the conditions under which they are working are worst that they have been.”

Most of these workers in the formal sector do not have written contracts, their taxes and pension contributions are not paid and allowances due them are not paid by their employers.

The report also noted that the working conditions in the informal sector are equally bad. The Institute is asking the state to put in place measures that could correct such situations.

Ghana continuous to experience labour agitations with all kinds of labour unions protesting their working conditions. Some have embarked on strike with the country’s judges the latest to issue a threat of strike if their conditions of work are not improved.
