There was a second day of chaos in the Ugandan parliament on Wednesday when Members of Parliament engaged in a scuffle by throwing chairs and punches at each other.
On Tuesday there was a similar brawl following claims that one of the MPs, the state minister for water, Ronald Kibuule brought a gun into parliament.
The Speaker of the Ugandan parliament Rebecca Kadaga on Wednesday suspended the minister who was accused of bringing the said gun into the lawmaking chamber and 25 other MPs who allegedly participated in the chaos.
Most of the suspended MPs, were from the opposition who are opposed to ongoing attempts to review the country’s constitution and scrap the presidential age limit of 75 years.
There was a standoff among other MPs and those suspended as they resist exiting the chamber. Security officers stormed the chamber to force the MPs out, according to local media Daily Monitor.
Demonstrations were held last week in Uganda as critics of the country’s President, Yoweri Museveni protest attempts to remove the presidential term limit.
Members of Parliament from the ruling National Resistance Movement voted unanimously in favour of the motion seeking to amend to remove the age limit.
The latest move is seen as a major step in doing away with this age limit and the biggest beneficiary would be the President.
If the amendment is successful, it will be the second major change to the constitution of Uganda which has lasted for 20 years.
The previous major change to the constitution was the removal of the term limits in 2005 which prolonged President Museveni’s stay in power.
