The President of the United States, Donald Trump has been slammed by the African Union following his decision to include Chad in the latest US travel ban list.
On Wednesday the Union in a statement said it was surprised by the decision ad finds it worrying that US President Donald Trump took such a decision.
The statement also stated how the AU is unhappy with the presence of three African countries – Libya, Somalia and Sudan – on the US’s original travel ban although it welcomed the removal of Sudan from the new list issued over the weekend.
The AU statement said the union “expressed bewilderment at the imposition of the unjust travel ban on the Republic of Chad, in particular, given its important role in the fight against terrorism in the Lake Chad Basin, Northern Mali, and the Sahel”.
Per the new travel ban citizens from Chad and other African countries listed are indefinitely blocked from entry to the US.
According to the AU it shared US concerns over “the threat of terrorism and violent extremism” but insisted that “co-operation and meaningful engagement” was needed as solutions.
“The free and legal movement of people is the foundation of a stronger and mutually enriching relationship between the African continent and the United States,” the AU added.
The ban which takes effect from October 18 also covers Iran, North Korea, Syria, Venezuela and Yemen.
