Over 34 inmates of a prison in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo on Sunday broke jail escaping through brick walls.

Local officials told AP on Monday that the prisoners escaped during heavy rains.

South Kivu provincial justice minister Pasaline Basezage is reported to have said that at least 27 of the prisoners who escaped were convicted of sexual and violent crimes.

The detention facility in Mwenga, south of Bukavu, was holding 42 inmates during the time of the breakout.

Four of the escapee prisoners have however been re-captured according to Mwenga administrator Desire Masumbuko.

Residents are being asked to assist in re-arresting the remaining inmates on the run.

There have been several jail breaks in DRC over the years. In June this year eleven people were killed when militants attacked a prison and freed more than 900 inmates.

In May about 4,000 inmates escaped from a security prison in the capital Kinshasa following an attack blamed on a separatist sect.
