The chief prosecutor of Kenya is to investigate the conduct of the country’s August 8 elections after the Supreme Court by majority decision annulled the results and ordered fresh presidential election.
The Supreme Court blamed the electoral commission for the flaws that led to the nullification of the election results but failed to convict any official of criminal offences.
The Director of Public Prosecutions in Kenya Keriako Tobiko has asked the police and anti-corruption agency to investigate all electoral officials and stakeholders that participated in the elections with possibility of charging individuals who might have played a role in the identified irregularities.
The President of Kenya, Uhuru Kenyatta last week accused the country’s Supreme Court of undertaking a ‘coup’ in their decision to nullify his electoral victory on August 8.
The Supreme Court by majority decision ordered fresh elections after the opposition leader, Raila Odinga filed a petition challenging the election results.
The re-run of the presidential elections will take place on October 26 after the initial date of October 17 was extended.
