The Rwandan women’s activist Diane Shima Rwigara who is a critic of President Paul Kagame is now facing treason charges after her latest arrest on Friday by police in Rwanda.
Diane Rwigara who was disqualified from contesting recently held presidential elections won by President Kagame was already facing charges of tax invasion and forgery.
She was arrested twice and released on bail but following her latest arrest, police officials have revised the charges to include her plotting against the President, according to TheEastAfrican.
Rwigara, her mother and sister were all arrested and released to go home.
Police spokesperson Theo Badege said in a statement Sunday that “The decision to arrest was in addition to the behaviour of the suspects during preliminary investigations, particularly their consistent refusal to cooperate with the police and publicly revealing information that is, by law, supposed to be confidential,”
Rwigara earlier before her arrest told TheEastAfrican that “I am at the CID from early morning until 2am or 3am almost every day. Police comes to pick us and drops us back home almost every day. Money was taken from our bank accounts; the accounts were frozen and all our businesses have shutdown.”
The 35-year-old accountant, prior to the August presidential election accused President Kagame of stifling dissent and holding on to power.
