Flooding in the eastern part of the Democratic Republic of Congo has killed at least 10 people with local officials saying on Wednesday that 92 others have gone missing.

The flooding was caused by torrential rains causing a river to overflow its banks, Reuters reported.

The administrator of Masisi territory in eastern Congo’s North Kivu province, Dieudonne Tshishiku, was reported by Reuters as saying that emergency teams had been dispatched to the town of Bihambwe to search for the missing.

“The provisional toll after torrential rain hit the villages of Bihambwe and Matanda in Masisi Territory is 12 dead, 18 injured and 92 missing,” said Julien Paluku, governor of Nord Kivu province, who spoke to AFP.

AP also reported that the deputy provincial parliament member, Robert Seninga, said 18 people have been injured in the flooding with over 100 homes also destroyed.

Landslides near mines in the region have also been reported.
