Kenya’s President, Uhuru Kenyatta has jumped to the defence of the country’s Chief Justice, David Maraga by asking the lawmaker who petitioned for his removal to drop the case.
Mr. Kenyatta on Friday while addressing a group of leaders at Central Kenya asked the MP, Ngunjiri Wambugu to drop the petition and “leave the Judiciary alone.”
Ngunjiri Wambugu belongs to the ruling Jubilee Party but his party on Thursday distanced itself from the petition.
“We have had a discussion with Wambugu and other Jubilee MPs with a possibility to withdraw the petition. We also want to categorically state that the petition is not a jubilee affair,” A leader of the majority MPs Aden Duale said.
Wambugu said the Chief Justice lacks credibility and must be removed from office, but President Kenyatta said “We have agreed to go back to the voters and go to the ballot,” stating that the petition is irrelevant and must be dropped.
The Chief Justice recently ruled that the electoral victory of Mr. Kenyatta in the August 8 presidential election was flawed and must be re-run.
That re-run will take place on October 17.
