Tunisia has scrapped an old law that prevents women from marrying non-Muslims after the government said on Thursday that woman can now marry who ever they want including non-Muslims.
Tunisia’s President Beji Caid Essebsi had called for the ban which has been in place since 1973 to be scrapped.
Many Human rights groups have also made similar demands saying the law discriminates against women.
AFP reports that a spokeswoman for the president, Saida Garrach posted on Facebook saying “Congratulations to the women of Tunisia for the enshrinement of the right to the freedom to choose one’s spouse.”
Non-Muslim men were not allowed over the years to marry a Tunisian woman unless he had converted to Islam and submit a proof of that.
With this new decision, Tunisian women who want to marry spouses that are non-Muslims can do so henceforth.
