The President of Zimbabwe, Robert Mugabe and his wife Grace have registered as voters ahead of the country’s presidential elections next year.

The first couple thus kick start the voter registration process which will end in January of 2018 despite agitations from the opposition.

The opposition leader in Zimbabwe, Morgan Tsvangirai and his party the MDC had sued the country’s President Robert Mugabe for announcing a date for the start of compiling a new voter register ahead of the country’s 2018 presidential and parliamentary elections.

But Mr. Tsvangirai’s MDC party filed a suit at the high court seeking to revers the new date for the compilation.

Opposition parties had demanded a new register for voters and have previously accused Mugabe’s ruling ZANU-PF party of manipulating the existing register, claims that have been denied by the ZANU-PF.

All Zimbabweans will have to register afresh using a new system which will capture their biometric data which include fingerprints and facial features.

Mr Mugabe, 93, complained about the process taking a bit too long. The electoral commission is targeting seven million voters.
