The opposition leader in Zimbabwe, Morgan Tsvangirai and his party the MDC have sued the country’s President Robert Mugabe for announcing a date for the start of compiling a new voter register ahead of the country’s 2018 presidential and parliamentary elections.
Mr. Mugabe last week said in an official government notice that the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission would start registering voters on September 14 with the process ending on January 15 of 2018.
But Mr. Tsvangirai’s MDC party filed a suit at the high court seeking to revers the new date for the compilation, according to the New Zimbabwe.
The MDC said the president can not announce a new date before the electoral commission secures bio-metric voters registration servers.
Opposition parties had demanded a new register for voters and have previously accused Mugabe’s ruling ZANU-PF party of manipulating the existing register, claims that have been denied by the ZANU-PF.
