A school girl in Kenya has been charged with murder for the death of nine of her schoolmates in a fire outbreak at a girls school.
The students died when fire gutted the Moi Girls School in Kenya’s capital Nairobi this month. Several others sustained injuries.
When the form one student appeared at the Milimani juvenile court last week, she was not charged but on Wednesday police charged her with nine counts of murder.
The school girl however denied all the charges during an in-camera proceedings. Her lawyers and state prosecutors are to reappear in court on Friday over her bail conditions.
This is not the first time such a disaster has been recorded in Kenya with 58 schoolboys dieing in a similar dormitory fire in 2001 at Kyanguli Secondary School outside Nairobi.
Another eight students died at a school in Homa Bay County in western Kenya in 2012.
