A Tanzanian minister, George Simbachawene on Thursday resigned following the outcome of an investigation into a diamond mining contracted awarded to Petra Diamonds Ltd.
The President of Tanzania John Magufuli had ordered the resignation of senior public officials following a probe into the said contract awarded.
Mr. Magufuli said he has ordered a review of the contract and action taken against public officials who worked on the contract.
In a televised contract Magufuli said “I have endorsed all the recommendations of the parliamentary probe committees for the review of the Williamson diamond mine contract.”
The Tanzanian state-run broadcaster reported that George Simbachawene who was named in the investigative report on the matter has resigned. He was the Minister of State in the President’s Office.
Petra has a 75 percent stake in the diamond mine with the Tanzanian government owning the rest.
