Uganda has declared ‘war’ on pornography by forming an anti-pornography committee with the mandate to prevent the use and distribution of such pornographic materials in the country.
The committee with nine members has been tasked to identify, seize and destroy any pornographic material in the country.
Persons found with such materials are also allowed by the East African nation’s laws to be arrested and prosecuted.
Individuals also affected by pornography will be supported through a rehabilitation program.
Uganda’s Ethics Minister Simon Lokodo has said that the anti-pornography committee with the support of a sophisticated gadget monitor and intercept, downloading, watching, sharing and transmission of electronic pornographic material, Kenyan News reports.
He is quoted as saying that Pornography is “one of the deadliest moral diseases in this country” that must be stopped to propel growth of the country’s economy.
“Pornography is now eroding Uganda’s human resource,” Lokodo said, stating that “this will in turn hinder the achievement of our vision.”
Media and cinema operators broadcasting pornographic material will also be punished under the new law.
