The President of Tanzania John Magufuli has ordered the resignation of senior public officials in his country following a probe into a mining contract awarded to Petra Diamonds Ltd.
Mr. Magufuli on Thursday said he has ordered a review of the contract and action taken against public officials who worked on the contract.
In a televised contract Magufuli said “I have endorsed all the recommendations of the parliamentary probe committees for the review of the Williamson diamond mine contract.”
Petra has a 75 percent stake in the diamond mine with the Tanzanian government owning the rest.
The Tanzanian President considered as revolutionary in his governance style also ordered law enforcement agencies to investigate allegations of under-declared diamond exports.
Mr. Magufuli has been waging war against corruption within the mining sector since his election in 2015. Laws on mining in Tanzania have also been reviewed with companies renegotiating their contracts so the government can own up to 50 percent of shares in those mining companies.
