Nigerian officials are angry at the alleged killing of one of its nationals in South Africa by police officers and have now summoned South Africa’s envoy over the matter.
The summon which was issued on Tuesday is to get some clarity from the South African officials over the killing which took place in Kwazulu-Natal province.
According to Nigeria’s foreign ministry, Kingsley Ikeri, a 27-year-old was allegedly “suffocated to death by the South African police on the allegation that he was involved in drug trafficking”.
A statement from the ministry said it has now “summoned the South African Acting High Commissioner to Nigeria, Mr Kenneth Pedro, to protest the extra-judicial killing”.
Nigeria’s under-secretary for regions and international organizations Ifeoma Akabogu Chinwuba, is reported to have already expressed Nigeria’s unhappiness over the incident to the South African envoy.
The statement said Chinwuba urged South African authorities to bring those “responsible for the despicable acts” to justice.
“She further informed Mr Pedro that while the Federal Government of Nigeria would not condone illegal or anti-social acts or criminalities, it behoves the South African government to ensure that every resident accused of any offence is presumed innocent until proven guilty through the judicial process,” the statement said.
The victim, Ikeri is an Ibo who comes from southeast Nigeria. He is reported to have died on August 30.
