The president of Nigeria Muhammadu Buhari on Wednesday chaired his first cabinet meeting since returning from his sick leave in London.
Mr. Buhari canceled the meeting last week Wednesday without any reason, days after returning to Abuja on August 19 where he had stayed for months receiving medical treatment.
The ministers at the cabinet meeting were reported by the Nigerian News Agency to have thanked God for bringing the President back “in peace not in pieces’’.
Buhari after the meeting received and rewarded the Nigerian female basket ball team that won the 2017 Women Afrobasket Tournament in Mali.
In his first speech broadcast on national television last week the 74 year old Nigerian leader condemned separatists seeking to split the country with their demands for independence. According to the President, such demands crossed the red line and will not be met.
Buhari said he followed events in Nigeria while away and was “distressed to notice that some of the comments, especially in the social media have crossed our national red lines by daring to question our collective existence as a nation.”
He stressed that “Nigeria’s unity is settled and not negotiable. We shall not allow irresponsible elements to start trouble,”
Buhari alleged that some ethnic violence was “fueled by political mischief makers”.
