Five men accused of cannibalism in South Africa appeared in Court on Friday and refused to file application for bail.
Eyewitness news reported that the suspects refused to be granted bail at the Estcourt Magistrates Court following calls from community members for police to hand them over to them.
The five men, all in their early 30s, were arrested in KwaZulu-Natal this month by the police after one of them walked to the police claiming he was “tired of eating human flesh.”
Police spokesperson, Col Thembeka Mbhele was quoted shortly after the arrest to have said that when the suspect was questioned “he produced part of a human leg and a hand.”
Col Mbhele also told the media that “It is alleged that the suspects raped, killed and cut up the body of a woman, which they then consumed. The allegations by the suspect are that they would rape and kill the victims before they could cut them into pieces and eat their parts,”
The National Prosecuting Authority’s Natasha Ramkisson is quoted as saying after the court hearing that the suspects will remain in custody until their next court appearance in September.
“The matter had been sat down for a bail application, however, the five advised that they will not be applying for bail. The matter was then remanded to 28 September for further investigation.”
