The headquarters of Nigeria’s anti-graft body the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission was attacked by gunmen on Wednesday.
In a statement the commission said its top investigator was also threatened in a death threat note left behind by the attackers.
The commission which is based in Abuja has been combating corrupt activities in the West African nation. An investigator of the commission in Port Harcourt was shot and injured by some unknown attackers, weeks ago.
The anti-graft group in its statement gave an account of how the attack occurred by saying that “The group of heavily armed bandits invaded the office at about 05:00 and began shooting into the premises, damaging vehicles,”
The commission’s head of media, Wilson Uwujaren further said in the statement that “However, the attack was repelled by guards on duty.”
“A white envelope dropped by the attackers was found to contain a death threat addressed to Ishaku Sharu, a senior investigator with the Commission… who heads the foreign exchange malpractices fraud section.”
The senior investigator is reported to be probing “several politically exposed persons and retired military brass”.
The AFP reported that a police investigation is underway into the incident.
