Nigerian officials have arrested two child traffickers they say are notorious and have been operating for many years.
The two traffickers were arrested by police the Ekiti Command of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) on Tuesday.
The New Agency of Nigeria reported quoted the security Commandant, Donatus Ikemefuna as saying at a news conference that “Operatives of the NSCDC nabbed the suspects after they trafficked 32 minors into the state for illicit businesses.”
The security officials said they had trailed the suspects Stephen Udoh and Ede Thomas for “some time”. They are individuals said to be “specialized in intra-state child trafficking between Benue and Ekiti, and into other states in the South-West.”
Donatus Ikemefuna told local media that the traffickers use the children trafficked for “child labour and prostitution.”
Most of the children are between 5 and 18 years and are primary and secondary school children.
32 children were rescued during the arrest of these traffickers. They are to face prosecution after investigations are concluded by officials.
