The President of Zimbabwe Robert Mugabe has donated $1 million to the African Union (A.U.) Foundation after the sale of cattle from Zimbabwean farmers.
He officially handed over a cheque to the he A.U. Commission (AUC) chairperson, Moussa Faki Mahamat, on the floor of the AU headquarters on Monday at the 29th Heads of State summit in Ethiopia’s capital Addis Ababa.

The move by Mr. Mugabe, 93 is part of efforts at ensuring that the continental body does not depend on foreign aid for its operations.

Local media in Zimbabwe reported that the $1 million was raised from the sale of cattle donated by Zimbabwean farmers after an appeal by Mr. Mugabe to help the A.U. finance its activities.

Zimbabwe is currently struggling to deal with an economic crisis that has largely affected the country.
