The government of The Gambia has announced plans to sell four presidential jets used by the former leader, Yahya Jammeh.
According to the local news portal Fatunetwork, Gambia’s Finance Minister, Amadaou Sanneh made the announcement when he presented the Government’s Budget to parliament in Banjul.
The finance minister was quoted as saying “Asset sales are expected to yield D471 Million in 2017. These include the 4 Presidential planes, and sale of land, including those in prime tourism development areas which could generate investment.”
The new government of the Gambia led by President Adama Barrow who defeated Mr. Jammeh in last year’s presidential elections is struggling to access funds to fulfill many of its promises to voters.
The latest move the Finance Minister explained cut down on cost and bring in some revenue to run government business.
The European Union and the World Bank have all extended some level of financial support to the Adama Barrow government to restore the country to a better economic footing.
“Plans are underway to vigorously pursue recovery of stolen assets of the government through all available channels, including the assistance of the World Bank Stolen Assets Recovery Unit,” Sanneh added.
