Gambia’s top police officer who was appointed by the country’s former President, Yahya Jammeh has been replaced by President Adama Barrow.
Inspector General of Police (IGP) Yankuba Sonko was Gambia’s longest serving police chief after serving in that capacity for seven years.
On Thursday the Gambian presidency announced that Sonko will be replaced by Landing Kinteh. Sonko will now be redeployed to the foreign and diplomatic mission.
Yankuba Sonko was quoted by local news portal The Fatu Network as saying that “I thank you all (police officers), from the last recruit to the most senior officer” and further urged them to be loyal to the new government led by President Barrow.
“Be loyal to the Government of the day and always remember that as service men you should always be neutral for you are not politicians,” Sonko added.
The new police chief, Landing Kinteh had served with the African Union and United Nations missions in Darfur for until his appointment.
