The United States government has announced that plans are ongoing to deport some seven thousand Ghanaians from the U.S.A for abusing the terms of their visas.

These Ghanaians face deportation because they over-stayed the period stipulated in their visas.

The US Ambassador to Ghana, Robert Porter Jackson told journalists at a news conference on Wednesday that many Ghanaians who secure visas to travel to America have just refused to abide by the terms of those visas granted them.

“In fact about 7000 of them are currently at different stages of the deportation process. And we are not apologetic about that,” Jackson said.

Issues of visa fraud and abuse by some Ghanaians have been topical this week in the West African nation with the British government sanctioning some Members of Parliament who were accused of engaging in flouting U.K Visa regulations.

The speaker of Ghana’s parliament, Professor Mike Oquaye told the state owned newspaper Daily Graphic that “It has come to my notice and I take very, very serious view of the matter.”

“Every action will be taken on it because the reputation of the parliament of Ghana is very, very crucial,” Prof Oquaye added.

There have been reactions from the opposition political party, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the country’s lawmaking chamber.

The party’s spokesperson on foreign affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwah called on Ghanaians not to antagonize the British officials working in Ghana for the revelation.
