The West African nation Guinea-Bissau could face possible sanctions from the regional bloc ECOWAS over its current political crisis.
The country’s parliament is unable to sit and transact business due to the ongoing conflict between factions loyal to President Jose Mario Vaz and former Prime Minister Domingos Simoes Pereira.
ECOWAS in a statement on Tuesday announced that it would not hesitate to impose sanctions on those working against the implementation of a deal agreed to last year in neighbouring Guinea to resolve the political crisis.
The deal in Conakry stipulated that President Mario Vaz appoints a new prime minister who would name a new government.
President Vaz’s choice of Umaro Mokhtar Sissoco Embalo as the new prime minister has been challenged by his opponents mainly supporters of former Prime Minister Simoes Pereira.
An ECOWAS mission to Guinea-Bissau led by Liberia’s Foreign Minister Marjon Kamara has completed its visit and said in a statement that “In the absence of the implementation of the Conakry accords within a deadline of 30 days, ECOWAS will move onto sanctions measures.”
