At least 24 people are reported by local media in Kenya to have died in a car-crash.

According to the Daily Nation several other persons have have been injured after a bus was involved in a head on collision with an oil tanker at Kambu along the Nairobi-Mombasa highway.

The BBC also reported that the accident occurred when the driver of the bus with many passengers attempted over-taking another car and thereby colliding with the oil tanker loaded with cooking oil.

The Standard Media in Kenya also reported that the accident happened in the early morning hours of Tuesday.

A police chief, Leonard Kimaiyo told local media that the bus was bound to Malindi belonging to Buscar Company and the oil tanker that was headed to Nairobi from Mombasa.

Leonard Kimaiyo also told Reuters by telephone that “Twenty adults and three children died on the spot, while one adult died later in hospital,” Kimaiyo said.

He said most of the passengers were families returning from Easter festivities and students preparing for the reopening of schools after holidays.

Another 19 people were injured. Kimaiyo said the death toll could rise.
