Internet has now been restored to Anglophone regions in Cameroon after months offline. The government of Cameroon announced the restoration on Thursday in a statement.
The country’s Communication Minister, Issa Tchiroma Bakary in the statement said the government however has the right to take off the internet should it be misused by citizens.
According to the statement ‘‘The government urges the populations of these regions to be vigilant (and) to continue to nip in the bud the activities of extremists, secessionists and enemies of the Republic.’‘
The government had claimed that social media which depends on the internet was being abused by users who use it to spread false news.
There have also been protests by Anglophone-Cameroon over claims of discrimination and marginalization by the government.
Eight of Cameroon’s ten regions speak French but demands by the anglophone regions for an end to the imposition of French in schools and courts sparked violent protests.
Activists who demanded a restoration of the internet have welcomed the latest move by the Cameroonian government.
