Zimbabwe on Tuesday marked 37 years since it gained independence from British Colonial rule. The country held celebrations at the Harare stadium to mark the occasion.
The country’s 93 year old leader, Robert Mugabe used the occasion to preach the need for reforms particularly in the mining sector of the country.
“There is a lot of work which is going on in that sector, not least the reorganisation whose completion we impatiently await,” Mugabe said.
Mr. Mugabe who has also been pushing through with a land reform program to ensure the return of lands to indigenous Zimbabweans hopes that reforms in the mining sector will significantly support the country’s collapsing economy.
Zimbabwe is the world’s top two platinum producers. The sector employs a lot of citizens.
Mugabe said “Much is expected from this important sector. It must play its part towards this overall development vision we have.”
Due to the collapsing economy in the Southern African country parents are now being asked to pay the school fees of their children using livestock.
The Finance minister of Zimbabwe, has already told the country’s parliament this month that banks are to be asked to accept livestock as collateral for loans from small scale businesses.
It has become difficult for citizens to have access to cash.
