The Prosecutor at the International Criminal Court (ICC), Fatou Bensouda has said that violent incidents in the Democratic Republic of Congo could constitute war crimes.
In a statement she said that recent recent acts of violence in parts of the country including the killing of foreign United Nations experts, could constitute war crimes under the ICC.
“There have been reports of violent clashes between local militia and Congolese forces, a large number of killings of both civilians and non-civilians, kidnappings and summary executions,” Fatou Bensouda wrote in a statement.
Hundreds of people have been killed in the Kasai region in a conflict the Congolese government appears to be struggling to deal with.
The situation has been worsened by the ongoing political tension in the country due to breakdown in peace talks.
Current President, Joseph Kabila is expected to step down after elections are held this year, but implementing the agreement that will see him leave office has stalled.
