Eight people have been confirmed dead in a stampede in Lusaka, Zambia on Sunday. Over 20 others also sustained injuries in the stampede at a church event.
Local media reported that the stampede happened at the distributing of food parcels to those who gathered at the event.
The free food distribution happened at the church event which was an outreach program of the Church of Christ’s Olympic Youth Development Center.
A police spokesperson, Esther Mwaata Katongo was quoted by local media as saying “The victims are among the 35,000 which the group called Lesedi seven, had invited for prayers at OYDC. The group had also organized food hampers to distribute to people. This Lesedi seven is a grouping under Church of Christ.”
