A Ghanaian lawmaker, Mubarak Muntaka on Friday called on Ghanaians and Africans to boycott South African products and companies over the ongoing xenophobic attacks on foreigners in that country.
South African police fired tear gas, water cannon and rubber bullets to disperse rival marches by hundreds of protesters in Pretoria on Friday, after mobs looted stores this week believed to belong to immigrants.
Local media Starr FM in Accra reported that the MP told the parliament that his country folks must boycott all South African products and companies to send a signal to that country.
“I think the time has come for the African people to unite around this to at least, not to violently also attack their properties in our country, not to violently attack their citizens in our country but to boycott their products,” he said.
The MP further said that “If we begin to boycott every South African product they will begin to feel the heat home and that will let them know that we will not countenance it”.
Ghana’s Foreign Affairs Ministry however said that no Ghanaian has been killed in the attacks so far.
