Over 200 state vehicles have been reported by the government of Ghana to have gone missing.
The vehicles according to government communicators cannot be accounted for following the exit of the previous administration led by the former president of the country, John Mahama.
The new government led by President Nana Akufo-Addo is now making efforts to retrieve these vehicles. It is not known if the vehicles have been stolen or could just not be tracked due to lack of proper documentation.
The director of communications at the presidency, Eugene Arhin told local media that an audit carried out showed that “74 of the presidency’s 196 Toyota Land Cruisers, 20 of the 73 Toyota Land Cruiser Prados, 11 of the 24 Mercedes’, two of the 28 Toyota Avalons and two of the six BMWs” cannot be traced.
“As I speak to you there is only one vehicle he (The presdient) has been using during his rounds in Accra. You definitely have to ask yourself, where are all the vehicles. President Akufo-Addo is currently using a 2007 BMW model purchased by the state during the Ghana @50 celebrations… That is what he is using. So where are the cars?” Mr. Arhin told Starr FM.
Officials of the previous government have however denied the claims by the current government that vehicles are missing. The former communications minister Omane Boamah is reported by local media to have said that the claims were a “convenient way for the new government to justify the purchase of new vehicles”.
Ghana has a poor record keeping system. Efforts have been made by various regimes to improve upon record keeping and tracking of state properties.
Some analysts say this could be the reason for this brewing controversy. The man charged with the responsibility to manage transitions from outgoing governments to new governments in Ghana, David Yaro has expressed surprise at the development.
