Ambassadors sacked by The Gambia’s former leader Yahya Jammeh have been re-instated by the new president, Adama Barrow.
According to local media all the dismissed diplomats have been recalled weeks after they impressed upon their former boss to hand over power peacefully.
Mr. Jammeh was unhappy with a letter written by the ambassadors on Monday December 19, 2016 asking him to give up power after losing the presidential elections.
Prominent among the diplomats was the ambassador to the United States, Sheikh Omar Faye, who signed that letter together with 11 others.
The ambassadors to China, Turkey, Britain, the United Nations and Russia are among those recalled. Diplomats to Belgium, Senegal, Spain, Guinea Bissau and Ethiopia have also been recalled.
President Adama Barrow on Wednesday sworn into office 10 cabinet ministers on Wednesday in the capital Banjul.
The cabinet ministerial team included some political prisoners under the former leader, Yahya Jammeh.
Ousainou Darboe, Foreign Affairs minister, Omar Jallow, Agriculture minister, Dr. Isatou Touray, Trade minister and Amadou Sanneh, Finance and Economic Affairs Minister were released from prison on Monday.
Darboe told the media after the swearing in ceremony that “Gambians have been liberated from the tyranny of Yahya Jammeh and we are ready to serve the country efficiently without bias nor nepotism”.
