Weapons and ammunition have been seized from the home of former Gambian leader, Yahya Jammeh in Kanilai.

The weapons were seized by the ECOWAS troops currently in the country providing security assistance to the Gambian president Adama Barrow.

The commander of the ECOWAS joint mission, General François Ndiaye made the announcement of the seizure on Monday but did not mention the quantity of weapons.

He is quoted by the AFP to have said that “All weapons and ammunition are now in the custody of ECOWAS, so nothing will happen there (Kanilai). The situation is under control … the Gambian armed forces have been very cooperative”.

The ECOWAS troops were asked to remain in the Gambia, by President Barrow after Yahya Jammeh went into exile in Equatorial Guinea. Mr. Barrow said the troops will remain in the country until further notice.

But Mr. Barrow maintained General Ousmane Badjie as the head of the army despite being appointed by former president, Yahya Jammeh.

Meanwhile the head of an elite unit of the Gambian army, General Bora Colley has been arrested in Senegal. Four other members of Jammeh’s bodyguards have also been arrested after attempting to return to The Gambia. They had accompanied Mr. Jammeh into exile.
