Officers serving in the Zambia police command can no longer marry non-Zambians. They have been banned from doing so by the Zambia Police High Command.
The Lusakatimes reported that the order takes immediate effect.
This was contained in an official memo issued by Inspector General of Police Kakoma Kanganja in Lusaka.
The memo stated that “no police officer should marry a foreigner”. It said “therefore those already married to foreigners must declare their foreign spouses to the office of the inspector general of police”.
Officers who fail to make the said declaration risk facing disciplinary actions.
Lusakatimes reported that the Police Spokesperson Esther Mwaata Katongo has defended the instruction by the Inspector General saying it is constitutional.
She referred to the Zambia Police Act 103 Section 3 and 5 which covers marriages.
