The Germany is to deploy eight attack and transportation helicopters to Mali. It will also deploy 350 additional soldiers to the country, all being part of its role in the U.N. peacekeeping mission there.
Reuters news agency reported that the decision was taken by Germany’s cabinet on Wednesday.
The 250 additional soldiers will mean that Germany will now have about 1,000 soldiers serving on the peacekeeping mission in Mali, which is a significant portion of the larger base of U.N. mission there.
The peacekeeping mission in Mali is helping to ensure peace in that country as well as see to the implementation of a peace deal agreed in 2015 between the government and rebels.
Meanwhile the lower house of Germany’s parliament, Bundestag will have to approve these deployments.
Reuters also reported that the German cabinet approved the extension of a mission in northern Iraq pending parliamentary approval.
