Football’s world governing body, Fifa has voted to back proposals for the World Cup to be expanded to host 48 teams.

That means the number of teams playing in the tournament will increase from the current 32 to 48 during the 2026 World Cup.

This decision could mean well for Africa which is expected to see an increase in the number of teams representing the continent.

The competition will have some changes including initial 16 groups having three teams each. This will be followed by a knockout stage for the remaining 32 teams.

Fifa on Tuesday voted unanimously for the changes in Zurich which will have tournament matches increasing to 80, from current 64.

But the new changes have been criticized by some including the campaign group “New Fifa Now”. It considered the expansion “a money grab and power grab”.

In a statement it said the expansion will “dilute the competitiveness of the tournament and, therefore, the enjoyment of fans,”
