The former Prime Minister of Ivory Coast, Daniel Kablan Duncan has been named as the country’s vice president.
The Ivorian president Alassane Ouattara named Mr. Duncan as his vice-president following the adoption of a constitution backed by citizens of the country in a referendum late last year.
Mr. Ouattara is quoted by Reuters to have told lawmakers in parliament that his new vice president “…is a person of experience, a great servant of the state, who has demonstrated his exceptional personal and professional qualities in all the high functions he has occupied”.
The new vice president is one of the closest allies of the President. He is 73 years and an economist by profession.
The former Prime Minister on Monday dissolved the government and tendered in his resignation.
The new constitution creates a vice president position and was to be selected by the president. There will be a senate and that body will have one third of it nominated by the president.
To become a national of Ivory Coast the new constitution also provides that both parents of a presidential candidate must be born in Ivory Coast and doesn’t hold citizenship of any other country.
President Alassane Ouattara had said that the new constitution would bring an end to years of instability in his country.
The opposition have accused Mr. Ouattara of trying to decide his successor when his term ends in 2020.
