Ivory Coast Prime Minister Daniel Kablan Duncan.
The Prime Minister of Ivory Coast on Monday dissolved the government and tendered in his resignation.
Reuters reported that Daniel Kablan Duncan’s move was expected following the approval of a new constitution last month.
He is quoted by Reuters as saying “I have tendered my resignation and that of the government, he said at the Presidential palace, after a meeting with President Alassane Ouattara”.
The new constitution creates a vice president position and will be selected by the president. There will be a senate and that body will have one third of it nominated by the president.
To become a national of Ivory Coast the new constitution provides that both parents of a presidential candidate must be born in Ivory Coast and doesn’t hold citizenship of any other country.
Last year many Ivorians voted in a referendum backing the new constitution although the opposition boycotted the exercise.
President Alassane Ouattara had said that the new constitution would bring an end to years of instability in his country.
The opposition have accused Mr. Ouattara of trying to decide his successor when his term ends in 2020.
