A delegation of West African leaders is expected to travel to the Gambia on January 11 to make another attempt to resolve the current political crisis in that country.
The delegation will be led by Nigeria’s President Muhammadu Buhari. He will be joined by leaders of Sierra Leone and Liberia during that visit.
The Reuters news agency reported that, this is an outcome of a meeting that took place in Abuja on Monday between the Nigerian president and other West African leaders on the Gambia crisis.
The Nigeria’s Foreign Minister Geoffrey Onyeama is quoted by Reuters to have said that the aim of the trip to Gambia by these leaders will be to impress on Mr. Yahya Jammeh to hand over power to opposition leader Adama Barrow.
An earlier move by these leaders to persuade Mr. Jammeh to step down peacefully failed last month.
Mr. Jammeh has warned of mutiny should ECOWAS’ standby force attempts to enter his country to force him out.
There are reports also of the Gambia Supreme Court not hearing a petition filed by Mr. Jammeh on Tuesday as foreign judges from Sierra Leone and Nigeria are not travelling to Banjul anymore as expected.
