Police in Nigeria have said that they have foiled an attempt to blow up a major bridge in commercial city, Lagos.

A 43-year old man has been arrested as the prime suspect in the plot, according to a statement from the spokesman for the Nigerian police force, Don Awunah.

Don Awunah said in the statement the suspect has expertise in explosives and targeted the Third Mainland Bridge in the city.

The suspect also told the police that he was working with a gang of people linked to the Niger Delta who are not happy that the government of Nigeria hasn’t included them in an amnesty scheme for militants who laid down their arms in exchange for money and training.

The Third Mainland Bridge serves thousands of drivers and connects Lagos with Victoria Island business district. Victoria Island business district is home to many businesses and banks that drive Africa’s biggest economy.

The foiled attack according to the police could have caused major devastation.

Awunah said “Further investigation is being intensified to arrest all the other members of the militant gang still at large,”.
