The opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the 2016 general elections held on Wednesday has urged the electoral commission to release certified results after the commission appeared to have delayed the release of results.
On Thursday aides of the leader of the NPP stated at a press conference that further delays would create suspicion and heighten tension.
Reuters news agency reported that the national youth organizer of the party,Sammy Awuku told the media, broadcast live on local radio and television stations the delay “gives suspicion that the commission is trying to overturn the clearly expressed will of the people”.
“We call on the youth of our country to remain calm, we also say the electoral commission has a responsibility to … restore sanity to the process.” He added.
The incumbent president John Mahama is seeking a re-election but is getting a challenge from his main rival, the opposition leader, Nana Akufo Addo. Other five individuals are also running for president in the elections.
