Millions of Ghanaians are voting on Wednesday to elect a new president and 275 members of parliament across the West African Country.
According to the election management body of Ghana, voting will take place in some 28, 992 polling centers across the country.
The incumbent president John Mahama is seeking a reelection but is getting a challenge from his main rival, the opposition leader, Nana Akufo Addo. Other five individuals are also running for president in the elections.
The Chairperson of the electoral commission, Charlotte Osei has assured voters her outfit is set to deliver credible polls. “It is not in our interest to deny anyone the right to exercise their franchise and so the challenges could have been avoided but they were not intentional” she said at a news conference on Tuesday.
Polls open at 07:00 GMT and are expected to close at 17:00 GMT. “If you’re in the queue at 5pm, you’ll be allowed to vote no matter how long it takes,” she added
Ghana’s president and presidential candidate John Dramani Mahama has addressed the country on the eve of elections urging the electorates to go out and vote.
His national address broadcast on public radio, television and on Facebook was delivered a few minutes after the electoral commission assured that it was fully prepared for the election process on December 7.
“Demonstrate to the world that Ghana ranks among the best in the world when it comes to democracy. Securing a peaceful election will rest heavily on how we conduct ourselves,” President Mahama advised.
