Police in Ghana have confirmed the death of at least two people after illegal miners clashed with police officers in the Eastern part of the country on Thursday.
Local media Starr FM however reports that its sources say the number of casualty could reach five.
Scores of the illegal miners have sustained injuries and have been hospitalized.
Some of the residents in the Asaamanma Township where the incident occurred told local media the police shot at the miners unprovoked.
The miners had taken over a mining concession belonging to a private mining company.
Starr FM reports that some residents were arrested while others were abused and left to bleed.
However, a police spokesperson, DSP John Yeboah told the media investigations have commenced into the matter.
Illegal mining is a major issue in Ghana as security agencies struggle to contain the menace.
Many water bodies in some communities in Ghana have been destroyed by the activities of these miners who do not have legal license to mine.
Some of them have taken over mining concessions of multi-national mining companies in the past.
