A cache of illegal weapons seized by Kenyan officials has been set ablaze on Tuesday. The 5,250 weapons in total were burnt in Ngong, the outskirt of the capital Nairobi.
The Associated Press news agency reported that the weapons were confiscated from criminals.
The firearms were first inspected by Kenya’s Deputy President William Ruto and Interior Cabinet Secretary Joseph Nkaissery.
Mr Ruto said “Firearms in the hands of wrong people continue to violate our peace and stability and become a threat to the security of our country. Armed violence, community conflict, cattle rustling, poaching violent crime is what makes this illicit firearm dangerous for our country”.
The firearms were recovered over the past nine years with some individuals surrendering them at their own free will.
The AP reports that at least 500,000 guns are illegally held by civilians in Kenya.
