Some Ghanaians are excited over a new flyover commissioned by the country’s president, John Mahama on Monday. A beautiful fountain built close to the interchange has now been named by some Ghanaians as “Accra Dubai”.
The newly constructed road network called the Kwame Nkrumah Interchange is in Accra. It links major parts of the capital to its central business district.
The previously known Kwame Nkrumah Circle was a busy road network that resulted in heavy vehicular and human congestion.
Ghana’s President, John Mahama at the commissioning disclosed that the country’s economy loses 100 million dollars annually to the heavy traffic that used to be experienced by motorists within the central business district of Accra.
The three-tier interchange cost 74.88 million euro and was jointly financed with credit from the Brazilian Government and the Government of Ghana.
“Lack of traffic flow [at Circle] resulted in an estimated loss of about 100 million dollars per annum to our national economy,” President Mahama said in Accra on Monday. The flyover is said to be the longest and highest in West Africa.
Meanwhile local media Starr FM is reporting of heavy traffic at the interchanged on Tuesday a day after its commissioning.
A frustrated passengers who spoke to Starr FM said “The situation is very irritating and unusual. I was hopeful that I was going to see an improved traffic situation after all that was seen on TV yesterday, but look at what we are enduring this morning, I even think they should have left the old situation to remain”.
