The Mali town of Banamba, about 100 kilometers (62 miles) north of the capital Bamako, was attacked late on Sunday and 21 prisoners were freed from jail, Mali’s justice minister Mamadou Ismael Konate said on Monday.
A prison guard was missing after the raid, Konate said, but he provided no further detail. A spokesman for the army confirmed the attack, which he said occurred around 2100 GMT.
It was not clear who was responsible for the raid and whether the town was still under siege on Monday morning.
