The police command in Nigerian state of Borno has announced on Monday that it has deployed some 100 female police officers to refugee camps in the north-eastern part of that state.
Male security officials have been accused by rights groups of sexually abusing women and girls. These male security officers were accused of committing human rights abuses as they crackdown on the militant group Boko Haram.
The Borno police chief Damian Chukwu said deploying the female police officers to the refugee camps will boost the confidence of women and girls in those camps.
He said “We feel that the victims might not want to talk freely to men, but they will be encouraged to open up to women policemen if the allegation is true.”
Investigations have been ordered by the country’s President Muhammadu Buhari into claims by 43 victims who told human rights groups that they had been raped by security officials at the camps.
